NASCAR business leaders sound off on I-77 toll lanes

Prominent NASCAR leaders are joining the fight against I-77 toll lanes.

Greg Wallace, son of Rusty Wallace and Vice President of Brand Management of Rusty Wallace Incorporated, read statements from Ray Evernham and Wheeler. Both Evernham and Wheeler strongly oppose the toll lane project.

"The project has been mismanaged, miscommunicated and is not in any way, shape or form fair to the residents, taxpayers and users of I-77,” Ray Evernham's statement read.

NCDOT says construction of the I-77 toll lane project is set to begin this summer. Canceling the project would cost upwards of $100 million.

The project adds express lanes along 26 miles of I-77. The price to use the lane varies based on demand. As part of the contract with Cintra, no general purposes lanes will be able to be constructed for 50 years along I-77.
