Every year the first Tuesday in August people gather around the nation for the National Night Out.
The main goal is for people to meet their neighbors and police officers. One of Charlotte's National Night Out parties took place in Hidden Valley- one of the most crime ridden areas of Charlotte.
Since last year's event kids have heard about people like Michael Brown and Eric Garner but the Charlotte- Mecklenburg Police Department wants to be proactive and build community relations.
"We just are having a conversation, connecting on the human level and making sure we see each other as human beings first. We are building that level of trust will continue to make this city a safe city," CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said.
National Night Out allows kids and community members to interact with the officers that patrol their neighborhood. It also allows kids to learn more about the people who keep them safe.
This was the 12th time National Night Out was held at the Tom Hunter Park in Hidden Valley.
