Newton mother pleads guilty in drowning death of son

A Newton mother pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Wednesday in connection with the drowning death of her 4-year-old son.

Kelli Elizabeth Ledford will spend between 16 and 29 months behind bars after she was sentenced in a Catawba County courtroom.

Her son Logan drowned in May of 2014 at Lookout Shoals Lake as he played in the water.

He had no flotation device on and Ledford was more than 200 feet away with an obstructed view.

She begged for mercy when she was given an opportunity to speak. But the district attorney noted in the case that her supervision was negligent.
