North Carolina trooper killed in Interstate-77 wreck north of Charlotte

A North Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was killed in an overnight wreck on Interstate-77 in Yadkin County, north of Charlotte. 

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. Monday, May 21 following a pursuit on I-77 southbound near NC-67, FOX 8 reports. The chase had began with a license check. 

During the chase, one trooper noticed he did not see a second patrol car behind him. When his attempt at contacting the other trooper failed, he turned around and found the patrol car engulfed in flames. 

According to FOX 8, the trooper has been identified as Samuel N. Bullard, 24, of Wilkes County. He was a three-year veteran assigned to Surry County. 

NC Highway Patrol is still searching for the suspect vehicle. Several southbound lanes on I-77 were closed for several hours in Yadkin County following the deadly crash.
