Officials: Greenville Co. deputy shot in head, suspect killed

A South Carolina deputy was shot in the head after a shootout with a robbery suspect, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to the Spring Groves Apartments in Taylors, South Carolina on Thursday around 1 a.m.

A neighbor at the apartment called police in regards to two robbers entering an apartment next door to her. She told deputies she heard gunshots and commotion by two robbers, according to reports. 

Deputies forced their way inside the apartment after they announced themselves several times and no one answered. A man inside started shooting at the deputies, hitting one of them in the face.

Another deputy shot back, killing the man, according to a supervisor with the sheriff's office.

The deputy who was hit was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. He is expected to make full recovery, according to Sheriff Loftis.

Both deputies are on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for an officer who fire his gun, according to the sheriff's office.
