Officials identify 14-year-old girl who drowned in Badin Lake

A 14-year-old girl who drowned Monday morning in Badin Lake has been identified, according to Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Crews were called at 11:50 a.m. Monday, September 5 near Kings Mountain Point after Katlyn Williams of Pleasant Garden, NC, was reported missing on the lake. 

The NC Wildlife Commission said Williams and two other girls were on an inflatable raft that was tethered 15 yards from the shoreline. They said her family was on the shore and started searching the water after she went under.

Emergency crews discovered Williams' body at 1:45 p.m. Monday. She was pronounced dead on scene.

Montgomery County Rescue Squad, North Carolina Wildlife Commission and local fire departments responded.

The North Caroline Wildlife Commission is leading the investigation.
