One dead after head-on collision in Cornelius

One person has died after a head-on collision involving a passenger car and a tractor trailer along Interstate 77 south just before the Exit 28 overpass in Cornelius, according to the Huntersville Fire Department.

Around 3:47 a.m. Dec. 5, authorities say the driver of the car was pronounced deceased at the scene, but remained heavily pinned inside the car.

Witnesses report the passenger car was driving in the wrong direction on the interstate and collided head-on with the tractor trailer.

I-77 Southbound at Exit 28 was closed for over two hours. The highway has since reopened for drivers.

HFD, Cornelius-Lemley Fire Rescue, North Meck Rescue and Medic are investigating the accident.
