One person found dead in crawl space after fire in Gastonia

One person was found dead in a house that caught fire Saturday afternoon in Gastonia, police said. 

Crews were dispatched to the 200 block of South Oakland St. around 4:13 p.m., according to the Gastonia Fire Department. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered light smoke coming from the back of the house and located a fire in the crawl space.

As the fire was being extinguished firefighters discovered someone in the crawl space. That person was pronounced dead on scene. Their identity has not been released.

According to investigators, the house has been vacant for more than a year. The Fire Investigation Task Force, as well as Gastonia police, continue to investigate.
