CORNELIUS, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A high school student is dead following a serious car crash in Cornelius over the weekend.
The single-vehicle wreck happened around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. Authorities said the student, who was from Hopewell High School in Huntersville, was riding in the vehicle when it smashed into a tree at 10600 block of Bailey Road near Statesville Road.
The driver, Grant Geis, was traveling east on Bailey Rd. when he lost control and collided rearward with a large tree. He is is in critical condition.
His passenger, Andres Morales was transported to Novant Health in Huntersville where he was pronounced dead.
Geis is a student at Hough High School, and Morales was a student at Hopewell High School.
Cornelius Police are still investigating, but it appears that speed was a factor in the crash.
