Pastor and his dog die in crash on I-40 EB in Catawba County

A pastor and his dog tragically died in a crash on I-40 eastbound in Catawba County Thursday, according to NC Highway Patrol.

The single-vehicle wreck happened around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday on the I-40 eastbound ramp. Fire officials said the car crashed into a pole on the ramp. The driver, Scott Randolph Hammett Jr., 59, of Clemmons, N.C., was pronounced dead on scene.

A dog that was inside the vehicle also died in the wreck, troopers said.

Hammett was the Senior Pastor of Clemmons First Baptist Church in Clemmons, North Carolina.

This investigation remains ongoing but troopers said they're considering the possibility of a medical condition as a contributing circumstance to the collision.

There were four secondary collisions that occurred in the back-up following the fatal crash.
