Pastor dies following house fire in Mount Holly

A Mount Holly pastor seriously injured in a house fire near his church has passed away, according to members of Goshen Free Will Baptist Church.

Pastor Clayton Burch was hurt in a house fire that broke out in the around 3 a.m. Tuesday morning at 1300 W. Catawba Avenue.

His wife was also injured in the fire, but was released from the hospital.

Firefighters on scene told FOX 46 that Pastor Burch was taken to the Caromont Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. He then had to be transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for treatment of his injures. He remained in critical condition following the tragic incident.

Five different fire departments responded to the scene. More than 50 percent of the home was damaged in the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Fire Marshal says it likely started in the couple's garage.

A service is set for Saturday, Dec. 8.
