A Weddington pastor who died from an accidental gunshot wound will be succeeded in the pulpit by his son.

Rev. Phillip RJ Davis will be installed Friday as the new senior pastor of Nations Ford Community Church. His father, Bishop Phillip Milton Davis, led the congregation for 36 years.

Authorities say Phillip Milton Davis was cleaning his pistol at his Weddington home Aug. 29 when it accidentally fired, causing a fatal chest wound.

In a statement Tuesday, the church said Phillip RJ Davis "is the person desired" by his parents "to be elevated to the office of senior pastor."

Phillip RJ Davis recently founded the Lead Charlotte Group, which the church said is a movement created "to empower a new generation for community leadership."

"He truly was a man after Gods own heart and led us in ways that we may never have again,” church member Edward Young said during an August memorial.
