CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - A 70-year-old pedestrian was fatally struck in east Charlotte while waiting for the bus, police say.
Officers were called to Central Ave. in the area of Kilborne Dr. around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday night in reference to a pedestrian accident.
An unresponsive man was found at the scene when officers arrived. Medic was called and the victim was taken to Atrium Health where he was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the pedestrian was crossing Central Avenue in the 4500 block when he was hit in the right lane of travel of the west bound lanes.
After being struck, the victim came to a final resting position in the roadway against the curb. The driver of the suspect vehicle did not stop or call 911.
A witness tried to follow the suspect vehicle but was unable to.
During the investigation, detectives determined that the suspect vehicle was a gold colored 4-door car using debris and parts, and were able to find the suspect and the vehicle at 4361 Central Avenue.
The suspect was taken to CMPD headquarters to be questioned. At the end of the interview Ngongo Elongo Musafiri was determined to be the driver of the Champagne 1998 Toyota Avalon, and he was arrested and charged with felony hit and run.
