Police charge 14-year-old in shooting of 10-year-old in north Charlotte

A 14-year-old has been charged in connection to the accidental shooting of a 10-year-old boy in north Charlotte, police said. 

The teenager has been charged with possession of a firearm by a minor. Police said it was determined the teen was in possession of the firearm and accidentally shot the boy in the abdomen Sunday. 

The 10-year-old and 14-year-old are neighborhood friends. They were playing together leading up to the accidental shooting. 

The incident occurred at a home in the 2400 block of Cairns Mill Court. Police said the 10-year-old boy was transported to CMC with life-threatening injuries.

Officers are trying to determine where the teenager found the gun.

Family members of the victim said the young boy underwent surgery and is expected to be okay.
