ROWAN CO., NC (WJZY) - A police chase ended in a serious crash Tuesday evening in Rowan County.
NCDOT said the incident happened at 4:52 p.m. along Interstate-85 southbound at mile marker 68. The left two lanes were temporarily closed near Exit 68 (US-29).
According to Rowan County Highway Patrol, a trooper was in the area when he clocked a Honda Accord going 85mph.
The trooper attempted to conduct traffic stop but vehicle accelerated.
The trooper pursued the Honda Accord and the chase reached top speeds of 140mph.
Officers ultimately did a PIT (precision immobilization technique) tapping the back of the suspect’s car causing him to crash.The vehicle ran left and struck a guardrail.
Police said the driver then got out of his vehicle and attempted to run. The trooper on scene pulled out a gun, but did not shoot. The driver then turned himself in.
The driver has been identified as Tyson Bernard Jackson of Charlotte. He was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Troopers discovered a firearm, marijuana and pills in the car. Jackson is a convicted felon with outstanding warrants.
Jackson is currently facing charges of felony speeding to elude, careless and reckless driving, failing to stop at a stop sign, no operator’s license, not heeding to blue lights and siren, possession of a firearm by a felon and misdemeanor drug charges.
