Police: Gaston Co. father arrested for shooting son

Gaston County Police are investigating a shooting in which they say a father shot his son leaving him in critical condition.

Police arrested Samuel Jay Williams, 56, Tuesday and charged him with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury as a result of a domestic dispute between him and his son. 

On Monday around 11:30 a.m. dispatchers got a 911 call about a father and son physically fighting in the road in front of their home at the 100 block of Long Creek Church Road.

Officers were sent out and within seconds were updated that shots had been fired and the son was laying on the ground.

Officers say one of the 911 calls came from the father stating he shot his son during the fight.

When officers arrived they Daniel Williams, 28, who was transported to Caromont Regional Medical Center with at least one gunshot wound in the hip/abdomen area. He is in critical condition after undergoing surgery Monday night, according to police.

The case remains under investigation and will be presented to the District Attorney's Office in reference to any possible criminal charges.
