Police: Homeless woman stabbed to death in uptown Charlotte, suspect in custody

James William Curry, 56, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A woman, who is believed to be homeless, was found stabbed to death under a bridge in uptown Charlotte, police said.

Officers said they were called to the 800 block of North College Street before 8 a.m. Thursday for reports of 'an assault with a deadly weapon.' When officers arrived they said they located a woman under the bridge with a stab wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police identified the victim as 62-year-old Diane McLelland. Thursday, May 9, was her birthday.

The suspect, James William Curry, 56, was arrested around 6 p.m. on Thursday in the 600 of N College Street. 

College Street was closed between 11th and 12th streets and crime scene personnel collected evidence.

The death marks the Charlotte's 50th homicide of 2019.
