Police investigating after 5 injured in SE Charlotte crash

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a serious crash that left five people injured. 

Officials said just after 11:00 p.m. a white hatchback rear ended another black vehicle, sending it airborne on Independence Blvd. near Sardis Road. 

Five people were taken to the hospital with injuries. Four of the victims' injuries are life-threatening and they are said to be in critical condition. 

Both the inbound and outbound lanes of Independence Blvd. were shut down overnight. Drivers that approached the area were being directed to turn around.
