Police looking for van involved in fatal east Charlotte crash

One person was killed in an accident Thursday night in east Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

Officers responded to the single-vehicle crash around 8:08 p.m. Thursday, October 27 at the 6300 block of Hickory Grove Road and Market Street. Reports indicated one person was pinned inside the vehicle.

Medic said Jean Lennon was transported to CMC with life-threatening injuries. Shortly after, CMPD declared Lennon dead in connection to the crash.

Lennon was driving a 2002 Honda CRV on Hickory Grove Road headed eastbound in the right lane of travel when a brown van merged from the left lane into the right lane in front of her vehicle, according to police.

Police said Lennon swerved to the right which caused her to hit the curb then drive head-on into a tree off the right side of the road.

Witnesses told officers traffic was backed up in the left lane due to another motor vehicle attempting to make a left turn on Market Street. Witnesses said that work style van, possibly brown, was stopped in the left lane in the line of vehicles and pulled out into the right lane to go around the stopped traffic.

Witnesses told officers when the van pulled out into the right lane, the Honda swerved right to avoid hitting the van, thus hitting the raised curb and running off the road to the right and hitting a tree.

Police said the Honda did not make contact with the brown van. The brown van was last seen heading on Hickory Grove toward Pence Road.

Alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors in this crash, according to police. Police said the victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

Hickory Grove Road was shut down between Pence and Harris Boulevard. It is now back open.

This is an ongoing, active hit and run investigation. There was no contact between the two motor vehicles so there is no known damage to the van. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact CMPD Major Crash Investigation Unit Detectives at 704-432-2169.
