Charlotte, NC - CMPD has arrested a suspect in the road rage incident that shutdown parts of Statesville Road/Avenue near Interstate 85 Monday morning.

Jaquan Carter is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and firearm by felon. Officers responded to the 5400 block of Statesville Road in reference to shots fired at 10:30 a.m. Officers were told that two people had gotten into a fight and Carter pulled out a gun and started shooting. Police say the bullets hit several unoccupied vehicles that were parked in the area and then Carter got in a vehicle and left the scene.

One witness says he saw Carter driving a white vehicle on Statesville Road right before the shooting. Then he saw him fire three shots and called 911.

"We were startled. I turned into alert. I was in survival mode to make sure nothing was happening to us," the witness said.

Police had shutdown Statesville Road/Avenue over the interstate while they search for the suspect. The off ramps from the interstate were also closed. As of 12:30p, the northbound lanes had reopened.

Soon after an assault with a deadly weapon call for service was reported in the 4100 block of Statesville Road. Officers determined Carter was involved in the earlier shootings and had gotten into an accident and left the vehicle and began shooting again. Police say Carter left the vehicle in gear causing it to roll into a ditch.

"He drove in the middle of the road, goes around the car, takes the right lane, and hits the black Honda and hit the ditch right over there you know," a witness said.

Authorities say after an extensive search in a wooded area, the K-9 Unit was unable to find the suspect but they did find a firearm.

Additional information and evidence gathered by officers and detectives led them to identifying Carter as the suspect. He was arrested earlier in the afternoon without incident.

Police say no one was injured during the accident or shootings.

Additional charges are possible for Carter, according to police.
