Police: Man charged with murder in deadly uptown shooting

Mecklenburg County Jail, suspect Albert Washington

A man has been arrested in connection to a deadly shooting that occurred in uptown Charlotte over the weekend, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Albert Washington, 24, has been charged with murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and possession of cocaine and marijuana.

The deadly shooting happened around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, March 16 in the 300 block of W. Trade Street in uptown. Police said they were called the area for reports of an armed robbery. A man had advised that his vehicle was stolen at gunpoint. The man told 911 that the suspect had not left the scene and was still sitting in his vehicle. As the man continued to speak with 911, he said the suspect got out of his vehicle and was then shot by an unknown person.

As CMPD officers arrived to the scene, they located the male robbery suspect lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. The man, identified as Brandon Christopher Clark, 20, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Clark had got out of the vehicle he had been attempting to steal, without ever moving it from the parking lot, when he was shot and killed by a suspect, now identified as Washington.

A woman who was sitting in another car in the same parking lot also had her vehicle shot into, but she was not harmed. A nearby occupied apartment on 5th Street was also struck by a bullet, police said.

This remains an ongoing, active investigation, police said. Anyone with further information on this case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or 704-432-TIPS.
