Police: Man shot and killed in Lancaster, gunman remains free

A man died on the way to the hospital following a shooting overnight in Lancaster, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. 

The shooting happened at 1:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 24 at a home on Maplewood Avenue. 

As deputies arrived on scene, they found a man identified as Jamey Randal McCants, 44, with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. He was transported to Springs Memorial Hospital and then to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He died on the way to Charlotte, deputies said. 

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 26. 

According to the sheriff's office, the person who fired the weapon remained on scene, as did all others who were home when the shooting occurred. Everyone there knew each other. The handgun used in the shooting was also recovered, deputies said. 

“Based upon the information we developed from our interviews with the witnesses concerning how and why this incident occurred, we did not take the person who fired the handgun into custody,” said Sheriff Barry Faile. “We are continuing to investigate this matter."
