ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — Officials say a discharged Anderson hospital patient tried to steal an ambulance while a paramedic was in the back.

Greg Shore, who owns Medshore Ambulance Service, tells multiple news outlets that a man who had been discharged from the AnMed Health Medical Center emergency room Wednesday jumped into the ambulance and began to drive away with the paramedic in the rear.

Shore says the paramedic managed to get through a divider into the front of the ambulance, putting the vehicle into park around the time it hit a curb. The ambulance never left the parking lot.

Anderson Police Department Capt. Kevin Warren says the driver, later identified as 47-year-old Lenny Ray Ware, is being held on an outstanding bench warrant and officers are deciding what charges to file against him.
