Police: One dead in South Charlotte crash

One person is dead and and two others are injured after a car wreck on East Woodlawn Road and Ruskin Drive in south Charlotte Monday afternoon, according to CMPD.

The accident happened around 3:20 p.m. Officers responded to the crash in the 800 block of East Woodlawn.

Jean Wilson was not wearing her seatbelt while heading east on East Woodlawn Road in the left lane. She was driving a Lexus when she drifted across the double yellow lane divider into opposing lanes. Joan McDonald was driving a Cadillac and heading west in the left lane of East Woodlawn. McDonald swerved to the right and applied her brakes in attempt to avoid the collision, according to CMPD.

Police say the Lexus and Cadillac hit head on. The Lexus rotated and came to rest facing north in the westbound lanes. The force of the impact pushed the Cadillac backwards and it came to rest straddling the double yellow lane divider, according to officials.

Kevin Barnhill was driving a Toyota Highlander traveling west in the right lane of East Woodlawn behind the Cadillac. The left side of the Toyota hit  the front of the Lexus and came to rest partly off the roadway.

Police say Wilson was pronounced dead at CMC around 4:00 p.m. McDonald was taken to CMC with serious injuries and Barnhill suffered minor injures.

Authorities say alcohol and excessive speed do not appear to be contributing factors in the accident.
