Police: Person killed in crash off I-77 was driving stolen vehicle

Police say one person was killed after the vehicle they were driving ran off the road and crashed after going airborne Wednesday morning in Steele Creek.

Officers with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called about 8:22 a.m. to assist NC State Highway Patrol about a single vehicle crash on I-77 near Westinghouse Boulevard.

Police say the vehicle was traveling too fast when it tried to negotiate the curve on the entrance ramp from I-77 to the NC Welcome Center. They say the driver ran off the right side of the road, striking a tree and light pole before going airborne. The vehicle struck a second tree while in the air.

The driver, 35-year-old Donald D. Angelo Dixon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Dixon was not wearing a seat belt, according to police.

It is not known at this time if the driver was impaired.

Investigators learned the vehicle involved in the crash had been reported in Charlotte at about 5:24 a.m. the same day and was involved in a hit and run at a separate location about 7:43 a.m.
