Portion of Central Avenue will be closed Monday

Heads up drivers, there is a road closure starting Monday morning that could impact the morning and evening commute for thousands of drivers in East Charlotte.

Central Avenue connects Plaza Midwood to Uptown Charlotte and is one of the busier roads in the community. Those who travel the route everyday have seen quite a few changes as the neighborhood expands.

"Yeah. When I drive around I see construction and barrels and chainlink fences." said business owner, Lesa Kastanas.

Now, repairs to a railroad crossing could bring more headaches. Central Avenue from Hawthorne Lane to The Plaza will be closed Monday  from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The closure could cut off many drivers during their commute and it's also shutting down access to part of the business district. Information about a detour was posted on the city website, but the news still came as a surprise to some people who live and work in the area.

"I sign up for all the newsletters and I get emails and at the same time I still found about this closing through our neighbors," said Kastanas.

Leaving the possibility that others won't be aware of the necessary detour.

"There will be a lot of people who are angry. There will be a lot of horn beeping outside," said Kastanas.

Officials are asking drivers to use Hawthorne Lane, Parkwood Avenue and The Plaza as alternate routes.

With construction taking place on the railroad tracks, crews say they won't let any traffic through and CATS service will also be impacted.
