(FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Freezing rain, ice and sleet hit parts of North Carolina hard Sunday morning, causing thousands to wake up in the dark.
Forsyth County, located in the northern part of the state, saw a large amount of reported power outages. Ice collecting on the trees, caused many to weigh down on power lines, knocking out power.
More than 30,000 Duke Energy customers were without power in Forsyth County as of 7:30 a.m.
Strong ice accumulations attributed to the higher power outage numbers Sunday. Guilford County's outages were also rising, sitting at more than 15,000.
