Charlotte, NC - A preschool teacher killed in a fatal accident Monday afternoon involving a CATS bus in Uptown has been identified.
Melanie Myers was a preschool teacher at First Baptist Church in Uptown, according to the church. She had been with the church for more than 20 years.
Fifteen others were injured. The accident happened at the intersection of E. 3rd Street and McDowell Street, off the ramp from John Belk Freeway.
A 1987 Ford F-150 was passing through the intersection during a red light when it was struck by the CATS bus.
The collision caused the bus to then veer left and sideswipe a 2013 Lexus. The driver was uninjured.
The driver of the Ford was transported to CMC with life threatening injuries, and was later pronounced deceased.
Thirteen of the nineteen passengers on the bus also received treatment for minor injuries at CMS, while driver of the bus was taken to Presbyterian Hospital with minor injures.
The outbound lane E. 3rd Street at S. McDowell Street was closed along with the ramp from the outer loop I-277 to E. 3rd Street through rush hour.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Union believe that the Ford may have experienced break failure.
The investigation is ongoing.
