Registered sex offender arrested for "providing care for minors" in Gastonia

A registered sex offender is behind bars for reportedly babysitting kids, violating a condition of his sex offender registration program.

Arrests warrants state Eric Spurling "provided for a minor or minors," at his home and that a child came forward claiming he touched her while playing in his backyard pool.

In public documents obtained by FOX 46 Charlotte, deputies stated, "Mr. Spurling has a trampoline, basketball court and pool, along with other toys seemingly to attract children to his residence."

Public documents also state that a witness reported "he wanted the children to change clothes at his residence," and that "neighborhood children would sleep over in a camper in the backyard."

About two weeks ago, Gena Rice said she called deputies to report his behavior.

"I started seeing him ride up and down the road on his hoverboard," Rice said. "I felt like he was trying to attract children to hang out with him, and then kids started going down there with him to hang out," she said.

Deputies searched the home and discovered he had home surveillance systems that recorded activity inside and outside his home. The footage is accessible by cell phone. Investigators have obtained his devices to help see if there is anything on them that will help them in this case.

Spurling was convicted in Washington State for sex crimes involving a minor prior to he relocation to North Carolina.
