Restaurant in University City robbed, employee smacked over head with gun

A restaurant worker is recovering after he was smacked over the head with a gun in a brazen robbery Monday night in the University City area of North Charlotte.

Workers at Wing Stop, a restaurant, told police just before closing Monday night, two men came in the back door with guns and held up the place.

The shift manager says he was opening the safe when the robbers hit him in the head with a gun. That caused the weapon to go off and bullets hit the walls.

That worker tells Fox 46 Charlotte he’s now doing alright. He’s a 20 year old student and even says he managed to make it to class the day after the robbery.

But the whole ordeal has shaken up other nearby businesses. Jersey Mike’s Subs is two doors down from Wing Stop. “You would like to think this is a safe area. It’s always been a safe area, this store has been here for over 20 years” said Curtis Drafton, Marketing Director at Jersey Mike’s.

“To hear that and then only hear about it the next day, makes me a little concerned with two things: one the safety of the area and our patrons, and then also are we getting notification out for our stores? Our store safety, we have a store full of college kids here every day,” said Drafton.

Police are combing through surveillance video to see if they can get a good look at the robbers who got away with some cash.
