Road rage incident leads to shots fired on I-85

Police need your help tracking down a vehicle involved in a road rage incident along a busy Charlotte highway Tuesday night.

A driver says shots were fired at him as he attempted to merge onto I-85 from West Sugar Creek Rd.

"I was just shocked, basically," said Robert Adams.

The incident happened around 11:45 Tuesday night.

Adams says while he was turning onto I-85 in his Jeep Grand Cherokee, he honked at a driver trying to push him off the road. Suddenly someone with a gun was hanging out the window.

"When I saw him coming out of the passenger side of the vehicle I figured that is what was coming. Then I saw the fire and heard the shots, basically, I knew," said Adams.

At least two shots were fired. Both missed Adams and his car. Surprisingly, Adams wasn't quick to pull over and call for help.

"I tried to speed up so I could try and get the license plate numbers or some kind of identification for the vehicle," said Adams.

Darkness along the busy highway didn't play into his favor. As the car continued to speed down I-85, Adams called 911.

Although there isn't a description of the vehicle just yet, Adams says CMPD is looking at nearby traffic camera and security footage to try and locate the suspect vehicle.

As the wait continues for a clear picture, Adams hopes the suspects don't cross paths with another driver.

"It was upsetting at first that you tired to run me off the road, but then you are going to follow it up by trying to shoot at me? It breaks the spirit sometimes when you hear stuff like this," said Adams.

Spirits can easily be lifted once again if tips from the public lead to an arrest.
