Scam: Caller claims to take family member hostage

Monroe Police say a scammer is calling people saying they have a family member held hostage and will not release them until they send them money.

Police say the scam plays on the emotions of the family member and can be convincing with some personal information.

Family members are told by the caller not to contact police.

If this type of call happens to you, you are advised to call police immediately and call the family member said to be in trouble.

The scam has been reported in Monroe and Union County.
