Shelby police charge teen in connection to June murder

Police in Shelby have charged a suspect in connection to a June murder. 

Malik Treshawn Jones, 16, is facing charges of first degree murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied property on June 13. Artist Daeshun Torrence, 19, was the victim hit by the gunfire while in the home on Melrose Drive. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Police say Jones was already being held at the Cleveland County jail on unrelated crimes and was served with these new charges on Monday. His first court appearance on Tuesday, Aug. 20, and will remain incarcerated without bond.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are possible.
