Sisters, ages 12 and 16, killed in Wilkes County multi-vehicle wreck

Two sisters, ages 12 and 16, were tragically killed in a multi-vehicle wreck Thursday evening in Wilkes County, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol. 

The crash happened at 4:40 p.m. along NC 18 near Painter Lane, about one-half mile south of the McGrady Fire Department, troopers said. 

Cassandra Elizabeth Gilbert, 16, of McGrady, of operating a 2006 Ford Freestyle and traveling north on NC 18 following a school bus. Troopers said a 2003 GMC pickup was traveling south on NC 18. 

Gilbert reportedly began attempting to pass the school bus in a passing zone. Before completing the passing maneuver and upon approaching a curve, the Ford encountered the GMC. 

Troopers said even though the GMC tried to avoid the crash, the vehicle collided head-on. 

The Ford same to rest in the roadway and the GMC overturned and came to rest on a guardrail on the shoulder, troopers said. 

Sixteen-year-old Gilbert and her sister, Madison Grace Gilbert, 12, of McGrady, both died in the crash. The driver of the GMC, Michael Shane Miller, 43, of Millers Creek, was transported to Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem with serious but non-life threatening injuries. 

Everyone was wearing seat belts and impairment is not suspected, troopers said.
