Ski resorts set to open this weekend

People hoping to hit the slopes this winter haven't had much luck. The warm weather this year has kept many skiers off the slopes in the North Carolina mountains.

There hasn’t been any skiing at Appalachian Ski Mountain since Dec. 23 but, officials hope to change that with snow making machines.

The resort’s goal is to use the machines to create a solid base of snow for skiers and snow boarders.

"I think it's amazing. I think I really want to come here. I haven't been here since I was in kindergarten,” resort visitor Zylah Walker said.

Resort President Brad Moretz told FOX 46 the created snow has an advantage over what falls from the sky.

"The machine made snow lasts longer that probably the biggest thing. It's not as likely to blow away,” he said.

The resort plans to reopen for skiing and snowboarding on Sunday. The resort’s ice rink opens Saturday.

Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain resorts are also making snow.

Sugar Mountain expects to open Saturday.

Beech Mountain plans to open Sunday, but other resort activities open Saturday. Ice skating will open at 10 a.m. and live music at the Beech Tree will begin at 5:30 p.m.
