Ski season gets a restart with cold temps this weekend

Mother nature is finally helping out local ski resorts. Many slopes opened just before the Thanksgiving holiday, but were closed over the last few weeks because rain and warm temperatures washed the snow away.

This weekend Appalachian Ski Mountain re-opened for the season. Crews fired up the snow machines last week to allow more than half of the trails to be coated with more than a foot of fresh powder.

More than half of the 12 trails at the resort were open for skiers. The early season woes is nothing new for the resort. Last December many trails were closed due to the warm weather.

Skiers say this season is off to a much better start despite the stop and go.

"We were planning last week to come up here, but it was rainy and the snow washed away and now we came up here. My husband was watching the video, you know the web cams," said Greta Kerr, who traveled from Mooresville.

Appalachian Ski Mountain plans to keep the snow making machines going as long as the temperatures allow it.
