South Carolina evacuees having trouble finding hotels to stay in Charlotte

Angela Woolridge and her two kids are South Carolina evacuees.

"We got really lucky, it's a crazy coincidence that we had we were meant to be here anyway," Angela Woolridge said.

Evacuees with rather unique luck.

"We didn't have any issues getting a hotel room. We were in town for a dance convention. We were due to come in tomorrow but so we just bumped up our travel date one day and chose to come today," Woolridge said.

But not everyone was as lucky as them.

"That's everything we prepped for the evacuation. So we had plenty of water, food and snacks, cause we didn't know if we would find a hotel and for the first night we didn't," Edward Wilson said.

Edward Wilson left Charleston during Wednesday’s evacuation.

"Everybody in Charleston did the same thing, at the same time. The traffic out of Charleston on I-26 was horrible," Wilson said.

Even with that said, Wilson was able to find a room at the Hyatt House until the storm clears out. The same spot, where some only found rooms through Saturday.

"Hopefully stay in this city. If not maybe we will go somewhere else. I don't know, Greenville probably. I have a couple of friends that went there,” College of Charleston evacuee Luke Fox said.

"We've gotten some cancelations but as soon as we are getting the cancelations, someone is booking it right up," Hyatt House Charlotte Center City General manager Matt Allen said.

A lot of the hotels here in uptown Charlotte are either completely booked or have one or two rooms left.  These hotels are trying to help South Carolina evacuees find hotels outside of Charlotte in the Concord area.

"We bought stuff to keep everyone occupied, so things to play together within the room, video games, plenty of snack, coloring books, etc.," Woolridge said.

"We are gonna to get in here and get something to eat and some rest before we go out and wander around because I like Charlotte. I haven't been here before but it looks nice so far," Wilson said.
