Standoff suspect communicated on social media during situation

The man involved in an hours-long standoff in Shelby on Monday communicated on social media during the event.

Camden Owen McWhirter, age 33, was arrested after peacefully surrendering.

He’s charged with assault with a deadly weapon and intent to kill inflicting serious injury, because police said he shot his grandfather after an argument

FOX 46 Charlotte spoke with a good friend of the suspect, who showed us that the two were communicating on social media and talked over the phone, during the standoff.

"One of my top scariest phone calls I’ve ever had," said William Kirksey, a friend of the suspect.

Kirksey said he sent him messages on Facebook to the suspect to show that someone cared and that they talked on the phone for about five minutes.

At one point during the Facebook communications, Kirksey even offered to go inside the home and sit with the suspect.

"I just wanted to see him come out of this, alive," the friend said.
