State seeks death penalty against suspects accused in Burke County murders

UPDATE: 11/30/16 (11:45 p.m.): Prosecutors for the state announced this week that they will pursue the death penalty against a third person in a double homicide case involving the deaths of two men in Burke County in September.

Scott Devon Hemphill, 33, is charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Spencer Murray and Albert Austin, whose bodies were found in the trunk of a burned vehicle.

He is the third suspect tied to the double homicide who will face the death penalty. The State announced two weeks ago that it will seek the death penalty for Icey Chennell Gooden and Brian Jerome Robinson, co-defendants in the murder case.

Gooden, 26, and Robinson, 33, are each charged with two counts of murder.

UPDATE: 9/23/16 (1:30 p.m.): Burke County emergency responders and the NC State Bureau of Investigation have identified four suspects in connection with the murder of Albert Alexander Austin and Spencer "Jermain" Murray after their remains were found in a burned out vehicle.

On Tuesday, September 22, investigators found and took Brian Robinson, Icey Gooden and Brandy Davis into custody without incident. Robinson and Gooden has been charged with two counts of murder and no bond. Davis has been charged with one count accessory after the fact to homicide and given a $250,000 secured bond. 

They were all taken to Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility and incarcerated there.

Scott Devon Hemphill was taken into custody in Mecklenburg County by CMPD Friday morning. He has been charged with two counts of murder.

The Burke County Sheriff's Office needs your help finding the suspects connected with a burned out car where the remains of two persons were found, according to the sheriff's office.

The human remains have been identified as Albert Alexander Austin and Spencer Murray.

There is now a Burke County Crime Stoppers Reward in the amount of $1,000.

The car was found Sunday morning around 8:00 a.m. near Canoe Creek Way in Morganton.

The car is a Cadillac Deville belonging to Austin, but is registered to Murray.
