Statesville man arrested after failing to register as a sex offender, notify police of move

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office has arrested a local man after they said he failed to register as a sex offender and notify authorities that he changed his address.

Deputies said on October 18, they received information that Michal Thomas Hiott was no longer living along Shanna Lane in Statesville.

Days later on October 21, authorities verified that Hiott had not returned his registration letter to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office. Hiott was required by law to return that registration letter to the sheriff's office within three business days after establishing a new residence.

On Tuesday, Nov. 29 after numerous attempts to locate Hiott, deputies received information that he was traveling in a vehicle on Wilkesboro Hwy close to Scott's Creek Road.

Police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and Hiott was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with failing to notify change of address as a sex offender and failure to register as a sex offender, both felonies. He received a $5,000 secured bond.
