STATESVILLE, NC (FOX 46) - A man is facing charges after a fatally shooting his girlfriend Monday night in Statesville, according to the Iredell County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies were called around 9:45 p.m. Monday to a home on Treeline Drive about a woman who had been shot inside a home.
One of the 911 callers, the victim's boyfriend, told dispatchers that he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. When deputies arrived they said they found the victim, Cortney Smith, on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators that in the moments just before the shot was heard, the couple could be heard laughing. They said immediately after the shot Smith's boyfriend, 21-year-old Jason Rashon Tenor, came out of the room and told others in the home that he accidentally shot Smith and called 911, according to deputies.
Tenor told investigators that he was handling a gun that had been left there a few days prior by another person. They said he admitted to handling the gun recklessly, but said he thought the gun was not loaded because the magazine was taken out. He also admitted that marijuana and paraphernalia found in the bedroom were his, deputies said.
Tenor is charged with involuntary manslaughter, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He appeared before a magistrate and was given $15,000 secured bond.
