Teen charged with bringing gun to West Charlotte High School

A 17-year-old student is facing charges after bring a loaded gun onto the campus of West Charlotte High School Friday morning.

The student, Nelson Smith, was taken into custody about 9:30 a.m. after the school resource officer noticed a gun in his waistband, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. The resource officer approached the teen after noticing a group of students Smith was with loitering on campus.

Administrators placed the school under restricted movement as a precaution. Additional resource officers were also called in.

Smith was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and gun on an educational property. He was taken to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

Principal Timisha Barnes-Jones sent the following letter to parents about the incident:

In addition to his charges, Smith will face disciplinary action from the school.
