Teen charged with murder after he admits to shooting man, stealing car

A 19-year-old has been charged with murder after authorities say he shot and killed a man before taking off in the victim’s vehicle.

At about 1:04 p.m. on September 14, Burke County 911 received a call from Hickory Police Department about a man with a gunshot wound in a home in the 1800 block of Hilferty Road.

Deputies said they found the dead man with a gunshot wound to the chest in a bedroom.

The victim has been identified as Jacob Andrew Lucas of Belmont, NC.

Investigators determined the suspect to be Caleb Joseph Van Arsdale, 19 of Mount Holly, NC, who later turned himself in. Van Arsdale was living at the Hilferty Road address at the time, authorities said.

According to Burke deputies, Van Arsdale confessed to shooting Lucas and leaving the scene in Lucas’ vehicle. He has been charged with murder.

Van Arsdale was taken to the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility where he is being held with no bond.

His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday, September 16 in Burke County.
