Teen shot, killed near greenway outside of Uptown Charlotte

A killer is on the loose after a man was murdered near one of Charlotte's greenways.

“You gotta be careful even walking anywhere,” said neighbor Cecilia Johnston.

Crime scene tape surrounded a quiet neighborhood after a man was shot and killed in broad daylight.

“It's really bad but I don't know what's going on. We don't usually have any problems in this neighborhood like that,” Johnston said.

Helicopters and K-9's searched the area.

Police say the victim,19-year-old Psi'keem Walker, was pronounced dead on scene from a gunshot wound to the head.

It happened just before 11:00 a.m. near E. 16th St. and the Greenway.

“K-9's out working leads. Not only will they work tracks for potential suspects but we also work tracks to find evidence that may be left behind during the incident,” CMPD Major Ryan Butler said.

One witness tells FOX 46 off camera she heard around seven shots fired. She says she saw a body lying on a basketball court and saw two men take off running in opposite directions.

Police won't say where the body was located or what may have led up to the shooting.

“There's no information we have at this time that indicates it was anywhere near the basketball courts,” Maj. Butler said.

Police don't believe this was a random killing, but so far aren't saying much else.

“It's extremely early we are canvassing for witnesses and the witnesses will be speaking to detectives”

So far no motive or suspects in the killing.

“I’m scared to walk by myself,” Johnston said.

Right now police are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.
