CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A 17-year-old was shot to death Sunday morning and his killer is on the loose, police say.
Daquan Shannon was shot around 12:15 a.m. at the Quick Trip on Central Avenue in the Eastway Division. The teen was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
“Just pray for us,” said Shannon’s cousin, who did not give her name and was too upset to talk after just finding out about Shannon’s death.
Investigators were seen bagging evidence. Police canvassed the neighborhood looking for witnesses, officials said. By late Sunday, CMPD would not say if they had a description of the suspect or suspects, a motive or how many shots were fired. Officials also would not say if the murder was captured by surveillance cameras, which could help the investigation.
On Facebook, the victim’s father wrote he is living in a “nightmare” and indicated his son and the killer were recently involved in an altercation.
The Quick Trip involved in the shooting was one of more than a dozen “safe zones” set up by CMPD and the gas station chain last October. The goal was to create safe meeting spots for completing online transactions after Zachary Finch, 21, was murdered trying to buy a phone.
This Quick Trip was one of 14 in Charlotte already providing additional security measures including 24-hour video surveillance.
“You got the street’s that’s out of control right now,” said Brian Huntley, who was waiting for the bus adjacent to the Quick Trip.
Huntley knows about violence firsthand. His cousin, Prentis Robinson, was gunned down on Facebook Live less than a week ago.
“It’s just sad because he’s a good person. I grieved him all this week and I hate that this happened. He’s a very talented man,” said Huntley. “It’s gonna get worse. As long as the legislation and gun laws are not practical, as long as the guns are in the hands of criminals, it’s going to get worse. It’s not going to get better.”
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 34-1600 or CMPD at (704) 432-TIPS and speak to a Homicide Unit detective.
