Third person charged in 2017 fatal shooting

A third person has been charged in connection to a fatal shooting that took place in August 2017. 

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged Layfayette Demon Burney, 31, for his involvement in the deadly summer shooting. 

Police said evidence gathered during the course of the investigation indicated that Burney was a suspect. He was arrested Tuesday afternoon without incident. He is charged with aiding and abetting. 

On August 8, 2017, officers responded to a call for an assault with a deadly weapon in the 6700 block of Independence Blvd. just before 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, a man was found inside a car with an apparent gunshot wound. Medic pronounced him dead on scene. 

The victim was later identified as Kyyri De Ji Marquis Doggette, 25. Doggette's death marked the 55th homicide in Charlotte of 2017. 

On November 2, 2017 Andre Earl Brooks, 23, was arrested and charged with murder. He is a convicted felon and was the first arrest made in this case.

The second person arrested in connection to the case was Lameek Singleton, 21. He was also charged with the murder.
