Transgender Awareness Kicks off Charlotte Pride

Charlotte Pride hosted the first of its kind local education event to promote transgender awareness on Monday.

Civil rights leaders, a former U.S. Navy SEAL and active U.S. Army Sergeant spoke to more than 100 people at the Levine Center.

"For the past two years, we've been doing a survey after Charlotte Pride to find out who is coming," Charlotte Pride's Craig Hopkins said. "We found out that the Transgender community was mostly missing, so we wanted to do some sort of outreach...and give them more visibility in the community."

Hopkins said the transgender community will have more booths set up at this year's Pride Fest than ever before.

Charlotte Pride kicks off Saturday at noon in Uptown. Cost is free.
