Tree comes crashing down on Cornelius home with family inside

A family's home was smashed Sunday evening when strong storms sent a huge tree tumbling down.

"We're just very fortunate, very blessed that everyone is ok. A house and possessions can always be replaced," said homeowner Joe Stevens.

The massive tree came crashing down on their home moments after he and wife got home.

"We had just walked in 30-45 seconds earlier. Like I said, we're very blessed and just glad everybody is ok," he said.

Stevens, his wife, their three-year-old and five-month-old took cover in the basement.

One county over, the National Weather Service was in Mooresville is looking at fallen trees to figure out just how powerful the storms were on Sunday.

Back down I-77 at Stevens' home the clean-up process is underway.

"You see a lot of stress and cracks in the drywall and stuff like that, some water damage. All in all pretty good just got to assess the damage and get the trees off the house," Stevens said.

He says he's keeping things in perspective, knowing it could've been worse.

"[I] just feel very, very fortunate my family is all safe. We just walked in the door and you see where the tree hit."
