Troopers: U-Haul driver killed after crashing into tree in Alexander County

The driver of a U-Haul rental pickup truck was killed Thursday morning after crashing into a tree in Alexander County, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol. 

The wreck happened around 5 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28 on Willie McLeod Road just south of NC-127. 

Troopers said the U-Haul pickup was traveling north on Willie McLeod Road, ran off the road to the right, overcorrected, ran off the road to the left, and collided with a tree. 

The driver, Travis Lamont Bennett, 44, of Stony Point, died at the scene, troopers said. Bennett was not restrained by a seat belt and there was no sign of impairment.
