Sunshine Mills, Inc. announced this week they're voluntarily recalling certain dog food products due to potential elevated levels of Vitamin D.

The products affected include:

  • Abound Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food, 4lb, UPC 0001111083556
  • Abound Chicken & Brown Rice Dog Food, 14lb, UPC 0001111083573

This dog food is sold in many North Carolina and South Carolina grocery stores including Harris Teeter. The local grocery store said they've removed the recalled products from its shelves.

"If you purchased any of these items, please do not allow your pet(s) to consume them. Instead, return them to your Harris Teeter for a full refund," Harris Tetter said in a written statement.

Excessive vitamin D in dogs could lead to vitamin D toxicity. Such symptoms may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Weakness
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite
  • Increased thirst (polydipsia)
  • Increased urination (polyuria)
  • Dark tarry feces containing blood
  • Blood in vomit
  • Loss of weight
  • Constipation
  • Seizures
  • Muscle tremors
  • Abdominal pain
  • Excessive drooling

If you believe your dog is suffering from vitamin D toxicity, you should contact your veterinarian.
